Want to spend a night in jail?

In San Francisco, Denise Green was pulled over by the police when a license plate scanner misread her plate by a single digit. Seven officers threw her on the ground and pointed guns at her. The error rate of this technology is estimated at between 10-30%.

In Detroit, Porcha Woodruff, a pregnant young mother, was arrested in front of her children by the police after facial recognition wrongfully identified her as a carjacking suspect. To date, all but one of the known and proven false arrests in America due to the use of facial recognition, have been of Black individuals.

In Nebraska, Celeste Burgess and her mother were prosecuted when it was discovered that she had used medication purchased legally online to terminate her pregnancy. Law enforcement used Facebook messages that revealed discussions between mother and daughter regarding acquiring the pills.

In Gainesville, Zachary McCoy experienced a legal and financial nightmare when data from his fitness tracking app, which sent his location information to Google, was exposed in a “geofence” warrant pertaining to a burglary investigation and which placed him at the scene of the crime.

In Pasco County, the school district shared information on student grades, discipline and attendance with the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff then fed the data into a predictive policing analytics algorithm to compile a list of students that officials believed could "fall into a life of crime." The students were subject to increased contact by law enforcement, including at home.

As more jurisdictions expand their use of surveillance and smart city technology, more scenarios like these will occur, each with the potential for police to use lethal force against innocent individuals.

In Washington, a high ranking Catholic Bishop was outed for using a queer dating app and attending gay bars after a data broker’s profile revealed his actions to a Catholic news site.

Add consumer identify theft, cybersecurity and ransomware, deep fakes, revenge porn, and stalking.

This is why Secure Justice fights.

Secure Justice is the ONLY org in the country that has successfully advocated for ALL the following:

  • Predictive policing analytics ban (the only one remaining in the country)

  • All biometrics surveillance technology ban (law enforcement)

  • Multiple facial recognition bans (law enforcement)

  • Facial recognition ban in spaces of public accommodation (private party)

  • Multiple privacy commissions

  • More data minimization/short data retention wins than we can keep track of

  • Multiple sanctuary city laws

  • Multiple sanctuary contracting laws (prohibits awarding of contracts to vendors that supply data to ICE)

  • Written and reviewed more surveillance technology privacy policies than we can keep track of
